Multiple midi inputs for modules in The Grid

A MIDI in module in The Grid to select either external controllers or cross-track routing. Being able of sending different MIDI signals to different modules in The Grid would allow to have different modules controlled by different controllers/sequencers in the same instance.

Together with “Output to new chain” module in the Grid, it could eliminate the need to create different tracks with different instances of The Grid loaded in.

What problem(s) would this feature resolve?

No matter how complex a Grid patch is, Bitwig producers are limited to play it with one MIDI input only. If they want to bring in more controllers or external sequencers, they need more tracks with separate Poly Grid instruments.

How does this feature fit in Bitwig as a product?

The Grid is one of Bitwig’s top selling points (a sound designer’s dream). This request would make The Grid as complete and self-contained as possible, improving flexibility and taking full advantage of Bitwig’s modular nature.

Is there already an alternative way to achieve this on Bitwig?

No

Could it be implemented using Bitwig components or APIs, without Bitwig team’s support?

No

Could it be provided by a VST or something else reasonably integrated with Bitwig?

No

Are there other products that offer this feature?

In Max for Live, the MIDI-in module can be set to receive signal from any MIDI channel available on your system.

Currently, FX Grid does have external note input option, but it affects whole patch. The only module that does have independent note input source option is Pitch Quantize, which allows to borrow a pre-defined scale from held notes. similar to how Harmonizer device works, but it doesn’t do weird input note offsets.

Yes, the point of this would be to offer a multi-input option and there is no way of doing this. Like I mentioned there is another thread about making it multi-output, I think that would be great and, paired with a multi-input option to give different modules their own dedicated midi-input would make the grid a perfectly self-contained modular environment inside of the daw.

I would be even okay with the ability to select MIDI channel for all related MIDI input nodes (gate, pitch, velocity etc.), 16 channels seems to be enough for starters. With that it is pretty simple to have just one MIDI clip, notes from separate tracks could be also relatively easy to route with some note receiver and channel map devices.

with current state of Note Grid at least it’s possible to use different channels now, but fingers crossed that they actually include sidechain option for Note in module while 4.2 is still in beta

Thougt this could be easily achieved by using a chain of note-receiver note effects. Setting up midi channel of your choice as usally in the instrument tracks and just selecting the input source a note-receiver effect on the chain in the grid instrument track. Could work, think so.

basically, you have to use Channel Map device on each receiver to steer it to specific channel (by default everything is channel 1), then use compare to input channel to do something specific for notes on that channel. for CCs there’s built-in channel selection setting.
