It would be very cool to be able to record directly into the sampler in The Grid. If you could have an input into the sampler, you would have many more ways to manipulate the audio than you get when using the Recorder device. This would greatly improve the use of the sampler for live performances, as well as experimental/modular style sampling techniques (especially if it can be routed back into itself).
The most basic example of how it would improve live performance is that, you would be able to very easily record your live synths/instruments/vocals, and replay them with a midi keayboard, as well as manipulate them in the sampler. This kind of thing is easy on hardware samplers, such as the “Elektron Octatrack”.
The way I imagine it looking is simply adding a record input with a gate input to trigger recording (just like the recorder device).
What problem(s) would this feature resolve?
We have the Recorder device, but it is kind of limited, because it lacks a note input, as well as other sampler parameters.
How does this feature fit in Bitwig as a product?
It expands on what it can do in a live performance, and opens new possibilities within the Grid. Bitwig 4 has greatly improved what Bitwig can do in live performance. This would be another feature that would set it apart from other DAW’s, and make it more competitive against dedicated hardware samplers.
Is there already an alternative way to achieve this on Bitwig?
There is the Recorder device in the Grid. But it is more limited than recording directly into the sampler.
Could it be implemented using Bitwig components or APIs, without Bitwig team’s support?
No
Could it be provided by an STV or something else reasonably integrated with Bitwig?
Not with Bitwig’s native sampler
Are there other products that offer this feature?
Many samplers do this, such as the Elektron Octatrack, Akai MPC, and Native Instruments Maschine.
