The proposal is to add a dedicated tool to reduce the number of selected automation points to a value provided by user.
What problem(s) would this feature resolve?
Using a midi controler to record automation generates a lot of automation points. Further manual edits to the automation curve is difficult unless the number of points is reduced. Currently the user has to delete the points manually.
How does this feature fit in Bitwig as a product?
Bitwig has already some advanced editing tools for automation on the histogram panel (mean, scale, chaos). Reducing automation points seems to be a basic and useful action which will fit there.
Is there already an alternative way to achieve this on Bitwig?
No.
However the number of automation points is automatically reduced (slightly) with no control over how many points are left. With hand drawing it’s typically acceptable but with a controller the number of points is still too big.
Could it be implemented using Bitwig components or APIs, without Bitwig team’s support?
No, it’s a core feature.
Could it be provided by a VST or something else reasonably integrated with Bitwig?
No.
Are there other products that offer this feature?
Reaper (Reduce Points tool). Probably others too.
