Ottopot, a DIY controller with Bitwig DNA

I’m so impressed by the work Bitwig community fellow GeroTakke has put on this DIY controller, open hardware, open source and all.

Hi Icaria, do you know how to contact Gerotakke. I want to order one, but sitll waiiting for mastodon account validated since weeks…and do not find any other way to contact him.
Looks really great and want one .

I got one and I can confirm it’s very cool! The automatic mapping to the controls of whatever device you click in is like magic. Turning the knobs feels smooth and precise. Natural.

@Pierrot I have shared the link to your comment here with Gerotakke. He can also be found on Bitwig’s Discord.

(((Waiting for weeks to get a Mastodon account approved is a clear signal (to me) that you should join another instance, not that one. There are hundreds of them!))

After three weeks using the Ottopot controller by @gerotakke, I can confidently say that I LOVE IT. With Bitwig it’s like hand in glove.

The only thing that bothers me a bit is the LED brightness in my dim light studio. After some iterations, I am going to order custom stickers. I’m an Inkscape nullity but I got what I wanted from it. In the pics, my “prototype” with plain paper printed with an old inkjet. Approved! I’m ordering the stickers on Monday.

This is an idea

I did something else
The led color match the bitwig ones : NB I reduced also the ligthing of the led.

(Had to place a sheet of paper on the Led to get the color with my smartphone)

Nice! How did you do this color-matching and reducing the light? Did you fork the firmware?

I wonder if this would be all I need to do, without having to do tricks with stickers. I started this because the light was too bright and bothered me in my dim light studio.

The program is open shared by Geko. If you have the needed equipment to flash the box, I may give you the modification to do. NB: I shared different kind of led management (including this one) with GEKA, he will probabely do an update… for the one who can flash the teensy.

Ok… I guess it will be stickers for me.

Well, If you know someone who know how to use Visual Studio Code, he may help you to flash your box. :face_savoring_food:

I use Linux so I guess that’s not the problem. But if I need a special cable… How to flash the firmware on a Teensy micro-controller - General - lines

I use linux too, you may flash via the USB cable
NB: At my side I hade to open the box to push on the teensy button to place it in program mode , I finally did a small hole in the bottom cover to acceed to the button without opein the box again.

Ah, related unrelated, I already used Teensy Loader app for Ubuntu Linux to update my 16n Faderbank. Is that all?

You will have to use the Visual Studio Code program for linux
You may have a look at this page GeroTakke.de - ottopot in the building and uploading the firmware.
I you may flash the original code (so you will have the possibility to go back or do your own modifications), I may give you the modified parts to get the matching colors

Uffffff. Ok. thank you very much but I will pass for now. Too many steps for another evening, and I already spent an evening (happily) conceiving the sticker alternative. I’m very happy that you got this working though! I had asked Gero when I got the controller and he wasn’t happy about the tests he had done by then.

Hi Icaria
here is a really simple way to update with the matching color :
I created an hex file you may upload using this : Teensy Loader Application - available for Windows, Linux and Macintosh systems
You may just start the teensy loader program (maybe as admin) with the box connected with it’s usb cable and reboot after. Update take 2 seconds .
I can’t place here the hex file here (not allowed) … if you want it, give me a way to send it to you.
NB: on my linux I must push on the teensy button ..but GERO on mac and windows do not have to do that …maybe not the case on your linux.

@Pierrot very nice job! And I might be biased, but I think your LED colors with my stickers are going to be the best combination.

These are just the plain paper tests. I guess I’ll get the stickers next week.
