When creating Bitwish, I went for the main page Top view, as a view to highlight to newcomers a ranking of popular topics. However, only a week after I think that Latest may work better for everyone. New users can see that there are discussions about features, and we can offer them a link to the vote ranking in the banner. Returning users see a changing main page, and not basically the same ranking with basically the same feature requests at the top.
What do you think?
Personally I’m ambivalent about this. On the one hand, showing the most popular posts would give a sense of the level of community engagement which might encourage visitors to get involved, whereas showing the latest posts might present a more dynamic view of the community and the discussions within it. I can’t speak for others of course but personally I feel more inclined to participate in a community if it looks as though there is active discussion and a responsive user base.
