Gain vs Volume in Tool

Should I care about the difference between Gain and Volume in Bitwig’s Tool? Can someone explain it? I guess it’s not just a second knob just in case you didn’t have enough high volume with just one.

there are 2 reasons why both exist in it. originally Tool device didn’t have Volume knob at all, but that meant you couldn’t effectively mute signal with it, so they added this knob in 3.0 or even later. it basically acts more similar to track fader with limited gain over 0db of just +18db. while Gain have higher gain range, and ‘linear’ distribution between -36 and +36db (well, db scale itself is not linear either way, but it’s ‘linear’ to our ears).
so all in all, you use Gain for correction, while Volume is used for general volume or automation, where you might want signal to fade in or out completely.

Yeah i replied to your comment(on tildesounds, incase i don’t have that username here ^^) about this with pretty much exactly what x.iso said, maybe i’ll add that the volume knob becomes a lot more useful to me if i map a macro modulator to it that makes it range from 0 to -infinity. basically lets you draw automation fades more quickly without fiddling to find the 0db line, you can just whack it all the way up. i have that set up in my tool preset
