Noob here… I love this synth but I don’t understand it. Someone (Polarity?) help me out please…

What is the sound source here? It looks like filters, envelopes, and effects but no oscillator. What am I missing?

Thanks!

Hi @RupertBingham, welcome to Bitwish and thank you for this interesting question.

This preset has a noise oscillator, and only with this it’s possible to create all kinds of synth presets. But then I removed it, sound kept coming and me too got confused. I kept removing modules until I found the culprit: the Low-pass LD filter module. This is a ladder filter and it includes resonance. Pushing that resonance beyond 100% makes it self-oscillating, and this can create sound “out of nothing”. Well, not really, if I understood this correctly, in analog circuits it will pick up floor noise and whatever else there is (even voltage? I get lost in the technical explanations) and this is what becomes very nice sine waves after enough self-oscillation. I guess digital emulations like this module replicate this.

I found good explanations here: https://www.reddit.com/r/synthesizers/comments/eaoqes/can_someone_explain_selfoscillating_filters_to_me/?rdt=53199

Hi @icaria36 ! Wow, thank you so much for checking this out and replying, I really appreciate your time! This is cool, I did not expect this answer. I tried removing modules too but I guess I gave up too soon. I figured it was some organizational function in the Grid I didn’t know about where you could hide another sub-patch or connection to a whole other preset.
This is so good to know. Not that I understand it but just being aware of it is going to help a lot in the future.
Thanks!!!
