I would call this a bug, but I filed the same request as such to Bitwig support and they have been ignoring it in the latest minor releases.
Mackie-like controllers like the SSL UF-1 have “secondary transport keys” to go back and forth. Both Logic Pro and Bitwig Studio use these keys to move between cue markers, but Studio has a problem.
Imagine that transport is playing, I move to marker X, wait 2 seconds and click the back cursor key twice.
In Logic Pro, if I do that, I go to marker X - 1.
In Bitwig, I go to marker X twice, that is useless! You can also see this in action at https://www.youtube.com/shorts/7SxLI08fpbc .
In other words, there is no way to escape marker X in Bitwig using the back key. Logic gives you about 3 seconds to hit the back key more than once and move you freely to previous markers. In Bitwig, instead, I need to stop transport first and then click on the back cursor as many times as necessary.
What problem(s) would this feature resolve?
Badly implemented support for Mackie-like controllers.
How does this feature fit in Bitwig as a product?
In my opinion, it can be considered a bug. Bitwig should have behaved like I describe all along.
Is there already an alternative way to achieve this on Bitwig?
Using the mouse, but that’s slower.
Could it be implemented using Bitwig components or APIs, without Bitwig team’s support?
Perhaps using custom controller scripts. However, Bitwig’s support for the Mackie controllers is intended to be native. They promoted it a lot at the time the SSL UF8/UF1 came out.
Could it be provided by a VST or something else reasonably integrated with Bitwig?
No, this would not make sense.
Are there other products that offer this feature?
Logic Pro, possibly others.
