It would be awesome to be able to put modulators anywhere in a bitwig project. As it is, modulators can only exist in the mods tab or in the grid, and without the option to color code them, it cab be hard to find a specific modulator among all the others, even with specific naming. How about Modulation Containers that can exist anywhere in the signal chain? Ableton has both Midi modulators and Audio modulators, and each can exist in a different place in the signal chain. The best option would be to have Mod Containers with color options.
modulation in Bitwig is hierarchy-dependant, and at this point we have project and track level modulators. color-coding specific macro modulators and such would certainly be helpful, but naming and hierarchy would still be main way to understand what belongs to where. I think the main improvement would be to have ability to click on modulation mapping in the inspector panel and have it automatically scroll and expand device chain to the source or destination depending on the tab used in the inspector panel (there are 2 mapping views).
Ableton’s approach is worse specifically because there’s no underlying logic for where you place the ‘modulator’ device, so it’s very easy to lose track of modulation source and target.
My approach for keeping modulators in Ableton organized is to rack them and have each modulator on its own chain, which can then be named and colored to match whichever macro it is modulating. I can then have multiple racks of modulators which can be reordered if necessary. IMO being able to have modulators anywhere is a much more flexible workflow. I still wish for colorcoding and Modulation Containers:)
